Mustasch & El Caco in Gothenburg

Last time I was at Sticky Fingers was to check out Queens of the Stone Age in the beginning of July... so it was a while since I was there (and I’ve missed a few interesting gigs since then also). But I wasn’t gonna miss Mustasch especially since they had El Caco in tow as well.

Mustasch & El CacoNovember 7th, 2001

This gig took place at a Wednesday, and I think there’s been some complaints from Sticky Fingers neighbours about the soundlevel `cause El Caco entered the stage at a quarter past 9 (or something like that)... because of that there were quita a few "stonerrockers" who missed out on seeing this band, which was a shame `cause they were a great live band. I forgot to ask for setlists from both bands this night, and since my memory isn’t up to normal standard (wonder why?), I can’t remember which songs were played and in what order... with a few exceptions.

El Caco’s gig consisted of songs from their "Viva" album, but I have to say that their live sound was much heavier than the sound on the record... but that’s how things should be, at least in my book (I hate it when a band plays all their songs in just the same way live as on record... boring!). El Caco got a great groove going and they had a great set of tunes that all benefitted from their heavier live approach... I especially liked the live version of "Cosmic".

I also had a chance to chat with the El Caco dudes after the gig... and as usual within this genre, they were all down to earth guys. It was also interesting to hear more about the Norwegian scene, judging from this conversation there seems to be a whole lot of Norwegian bands to keep an eye out for in the future...

After this it was time for the boys in Mustasch to enter the stage, it’s evident that they’ve been playing live a lot this year... every time I see `em live they seem to have climbed a few steps on the quality ladder. This set consisted of both songs from their "True Sound Of The New West" CDEP and from their upcoming first fullength album (it’ll be released sometime in January or February next year). During their hitsong "Homophobic/Alcoholic" it was singalong time with the audience, it’s a good tune... but I think I like songs like "Log" and "Muddy Waters" more. As always, Mustasch rocked the house at Sticky Fingers... if you ever get a chance to see `em live, don’t hesitate...

Be on the lookout for a "feature" about the making of Mustasch upcoming fullength sometime early next year. It’ll include photos from both the recording sessions in the studio and some previously unpublished ones from different gigs during this year... and possibly interviews and so on.
